He traveled to India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Australia, and Russia to practice meditation, culminating in full ordination in a Tibetan monastery in the Indian Himalayas. Puddicombe returned to Russia after completing a year-long meditation program in Scotland, where he spent four years studying meditation in Moscow. He left the monastic commitment after four years.
