‘Army of the Dead’ Prequel ‘Army of Thieves’ Gets a Teaser Trailer

The success of Zach Snyder’s action-packed zombie epic Army of the dead is being expanded upon in the new film Army of thieves. A prequel set six years before the events of the Netflix original, this heist film focuses on fan-favorite safecracker Ludwig Dieter, played by Matthias Schweighöfer.

The film follows Schweighöfer’s Dieter, a small-town bank teller who is recruited by a group of thieves to pull off daring robberies at the beginning of a zombie outbreak. Set across Europe, the ragtag group of criminals attempt bigger and more dangerous heists while being hunted by Interpol.

If the trailer is anything to go by it’s that this movie looks like a lot of fun, with a little Italian work vibe with it. Although it can be easy to take advantage of the reputation of Army of the dead channeling Dave Bautista and building a movie around him, Snyder and co. took a more interesting route by exploring the character of Dieter and how he got into the safe-cracking game.

Talk to IndieWire after release Army of the deadProducer Deborah Snyder called Army of thieves a “romantic heist comedy,” adding, “It stands alone, and [while] you can watch it because it’s the history of our safe, it’s also just a really sweet and funny movie,” she said. “It’s set in our timeline, but it’s not like a zombie movie. … It’s more of the same Italian work, but it takes place in a world where these zombies exist in America and it causes instability in banking institutions. They are moving money around so this is the perfect opportunity for a heist.”

Not only does Schweighöfer star, but the German actor also directs from a script by co-writer Shay Hatten. Army of the dead with Joby Harold, and producing alongside Zach and Deborah Snyder, Wesly Coller and Dan Maag.

Closed together with Schweighöfer is Game of Thrones And Fast and furious alumni Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee (Pole), Stuart Martin (Jamestown), Guz Khan (Men like Mobeen) and Jonathan Cohen (Budapest).

Along with this prequel, an animated series, Army of the Dead: Las Vegas, is also in the works. This show is said to be another prequel focusing on the main characters from Army of the deadincluding Bautista’s Scott Ward, Ana de la Reguera’s Maria Cruz, Omari Hardwick’s Vanderohe and Tig Notaro’s helicopter pilot Marianne Peters.

Army of thieves will be released later this year.
