Clarence was the son of Barbara and Clarence Darnell Gilyard Sr., an officer in the United States Air Force. He was the second of six children born to his parents and had five siblings. He was raised primarily as a Lutheran before becoming a Catholic in the 1990s.
During his teenage years, he lived in the San Bernardino suburb of Rialto, California, graduating from Eisenhower High School in 1974.
