His father, Lamin Sanneh, is a professor of theological history at Yale University and Yale Divinity School. He was born in Janjanbureh, Gambia. Kelefa’s mother, Sandra, is a white South African linguist who teaches isiZulu at Yale University. Sanneh earned a bachelor of arts degree from Harvard University in 1997. He worked for Transition Magazine and was the rock director for WHRB’s Recording Clinic while at Harvard.

Sanneh’s article “The Rap Against Rockism” published in The New York Times on October 31, 2004 received a lot of attention. The article exposes the debate between Us and British music critics about rockism, which Sanneh defines as idolizing an authentic old legend (or underground hero) while attempting to mock the star the latest pop music; worshiping punk while barely accepting disco; both love the live show and hate the MV; approve of the growling performer while hating lip-syncing.

Sanneh wrote “The Trinity Project,” published in The New Yorker on April 7, 2008, to contextualize the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s controversial comments as Barack Obama’s pastor. The article provides historical context for Obama’s church, Trinity United Church of Christ, as well as former Trinity pastor Wright. He left The New York Times in 2008 to become editor of The New Yorker. Sanneh lived in Brooklyn in 2009.
