On January 15, 1926, Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav was born in Goleshwar village of Karad Taluka in Satara district of Maharashtra. Khashaba was introduced to wrestling by his wrestler father, Dadasaheb, when he was 5 years old. From 1940 to 1947, he studied at Tilak High School. He was a member of the Escape from India Movement and pledged to raise the tricolor flag at the Olympics on 15 August 1947, the day India won its freedom.

Khashaba started wrestling at the age of 5 under the guidance of his father, Dadasaheb, a wrestling coach. Baburao Balawde and Belapuri Guruji were his wrestling coaches in college. He went on to beat wrestlers from countries including Mexico, Germany and Canada before losing the semifinals. However, he came back to win the bronze medal, becoming the first wrestler of an independent India to win an individual Olympic medal.
1948 Summer Olympics
The 1948 London Olympics were Jadhav’s first experience on a major platform; Maharaja of Kolhapur paid for his trip. He received training from Rees Gardner, a former lightweight world champion from the United States, while he was in London. Despite being new to floor wrestling, Gardner’s direction earned Jadhav a sixth place in the flyweight division. He shocked the crowd by winning the first few minutes of his bout against Australian wrestler Bert Harris. Then, after defeating Billy Jernigan of the United States, he was disqualified from the Olympics after falling to Iran’s Mansour Raeisi.
Jadhav increased his training over the next four years in preparation for the Helsinki Olympics, where he doubled his weight and competed alongside wrestlers from 24 other countries in the 125 lb bantamweight division.
1952 Summer Olympics
After a lengthy match, he had a chance to face off against Rashid Mammadbeyov of the Soviet Union. The law mandated a 30-minute break between matches, but since no Indian officials were there to debate the matter, exhausted Jadhav was unable to push and Mammadbeyov seized the opportunity to advance. Final match. He won a bronze medal on July 23, 1952, becoming the first individual medalist of the Independent India after defeating wrestlers from Canada, Mexico and Germany. Krishnarao Mangave, a wrestler who competed in the same Olympics in a different division but almost won a bronze medal with one point, was Khashaba’s teammate. Jadhav was the star of the Indian team returning home from the Olympics, despite the team’s gold medal winning hockey team in Helsinki. To greet their hero, crowds gathered at Karad Station. A cavalry group of 151 bullock carts and dhols carried their hero for about 10 km and advanced through the village of Goleshwar.
