Microphone Not Working on Discord? 11 Fixes to Try

Your microphone isn’t working on Discord? This issue is mainly caused by hardware issues with the microphone, incorrect microphone selection in Discord, temporary glitches with the app or device, restricted app permissions, issues with voice or browser settings Discord audio controls or misconfigured audio settings.

If you are fed up of this problem, here are some fixes you can apply to get your faulty microphone working again on Discord.

1. Restart your device

When we experience technical problems with an app or device, restarting the device you’re using to run the app is our first response. Most of the time, this fix works like a charm.

On reboot, all backend drivers and registry files will be newly created, along with the deletion of temporary files created during previous runtime. Usually, this will fix many problems.

Therefore, before trying any other fix, consider restarting your device to check if that resolves the problem. If not, continue with the other fixes listed below.

2. Test your microphone

If you are using an external microphone as an input device, make sure that it is not defective. Trying it in other apps or using another device can help you determine if the hardware itself is causing the problem.

If your microphone is the culprit, change it. If not, move on to the rest of the fixes.

3. Make sure to select the correct microphone

Do you have multiple microphones connected to your device? If so, Discord may be configured to use a device other than the one you are using. You can unplug one microphone from your device to have Discord automatically select the other microphone as the input device, or you can set the correct input device in Discord settings.

Follow these steps to change the input device in Discord settings:

1. Launch Discord.
2. Click the gear icon in the lower left corner to access User Settings.
3. On the left sidebar, click Voice and Video.
4. Select the correct microphone from the drop-down list under Input Devices in Voice Settings.

4. Restart or log out of Discord

Instead of diving into more complicated fixes, log out of Discord and restart your app. It may seem harmless at first, but in most cases, this step will solve the problem.

1. In the lower left corner, click the gear icon to bring up Discord Settings.
2. Scroll to the bottom and click Sign Out from the left sidebar.

Sign out, close the app, and sign back in.

Just doing this may solve some problems but is not always effective. Move on to the next fix if that’s the case.

5. Reset Discord voice settings

Discord gives you the option to reset your voice settings to default. This usually solves most voice related problems in Discord. So, try resetting your voice settings to see if that fixes the problem.

Here’s how you can reset voice settings in Discord:

1. Click the gear icon in the bottom left to display the app’s settings.
2. Navigate to Voice and Video settings in App Settings.
3. Click Reset voice settings at the bottom of the page.

6. Give Discord access to your microphone

Sometimes your system permissions may prevent some desktop applications from accessing your microphone. So, if you have turned off automatic microphone usage, Discord may not have access.

Here’s how you can enable microphone access not only for Discord but also for all other apps:

1. Use Windows Search to open Settings on your computer.
2. Navigate to Privacy in Settings. You can skip this step if you are using Windows 11.
3. Click Microphone under App Permissions in Privacy settings. If you’re using Windows 11, you can access the same by going to Privacy & security > Microphone.
4. Enabling the toggle allows the app to access your microphone.

7. Change input mode

If your microphone still doesn’t work after performing the other fixes in the list, try changing the input mode in voice settings to Push to Talk.

The Push to Talk setting requires you to press a specific keyboard key to allow the microphone to transmit audio. This setting helps solve most microphone problems on Windows.

Here’s how you can change the input mode in Discord:

1. Navigate to Discord settings by clicking the gear icon.
2. From the left sidebar, select Voice & Video under App Settings.
3. Change the input mode from Voice Activity to Push to Talk.
4. To activate Push to Talk, set any key on the keyboard as a Shortcut.

Although this fix can solve the problem, it sometimes has its quirks. So if the microphone problem is gone, you can change it again after some time.

8. Turn off Exclusive Mode on Windows

In Windows, there is an exclusive mode that allows a single device to take over the entire audio driver.

This mode can cause problems with your microphone, preventing other apps from using it if the preferred app has control. So, to rule out this cause, follow the steps below to disable this exclusive mode.

1. Search for Sound Settings using Windows Search and open it.
2. Click Device Properties after selecting your input device. Windows 11 users can scroll down to the right pane, click More audio settings > Audio recording, and select an input device.
3. In Related Settings, click Additional Device Properties. Windows 11 users can skip this step.
4. Navigate to Microphone Properties and select the Advanced tab.
5. Uncheck the Allow apps to take exclusive control of this device box in the Exclusive mode settings.
6. To apply the changes, click Apply.

9. Update your audio drivers

You can also check your system’s audio drivers. You will encounter problems not only with Discord but also with other applications if the problem is with the drivers. Blue and black screen errors, broken voice, and poor quality recordings indicate that the driver files are outdated.

Your device may have specific drivers for your audio input devices that you can update to get your microphone working again. However, depending on the type of device you’re using and the audio drivers on that device, you might not find the main driver that needs updating.

If that’s the case, update all audio drivers regardless of the device you’re using. In case the problem persists, you can reinstall all of them.

We’ll walk you through updating the Intel(R) Audio Display driver using the steps below. You can follow the same procedure to update other drivers.

1. Use Windows Search to find Device Manager.
2. Navigate to Sound, video, and game controller settings in Device Manager.
3. Open Intel(R) Display Audio and go to the Drivers tab in the pop-up menu.
4. Click Update Driver and you’re ready to go.
5. Click Search automatically for drivers and wait for the process to complete.

The name of the device and driver will vary depending on the hardware you use.

10. Disable quality of service

Discord comes with a Quality of Service High Packet Priority feature that signals your router to treat packets transmitted by Discord as high priority to ensure a smooth connection.

However, depending on your ISP and router, enabling this option in Discord may lead to unforeseen problems. Discord not catching the microphone’s voice could also be one of them. Here are the steps to disable this option and see if it helps:

1. Go to Discord settings by clicking the gear icon.
2. In App Settings, select Voice & Video.
3. Scroll down and find the Quality of Service setting.
4. Turn off the toggle to Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority.

Now, relaunch Discord and see if your microphone works without any problems.

11. Reinstall Discord

If none of the above fixes work, you can reinstall the Discord app after uninstalling it. Sometimes, hidden corrupt files prevent the app from working properly. Often, it is considered the root of many problems.

Here’s how you can uninstall the app:

1. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features.
2. In the list of applications, find Discord.
3. Click on Uninstall by left clicking on it.

Now, all you need to do is reinstall Discord from its official website.
