Thieves robbed a toy store in Pennsylvania, stealing more than $600 worth of Pokemon cards – and the whole thing was caught on camera.
Pokemon launched their first game in 1996, Pokemon Red and Blue, and released trading cards along with their games.
Fast forward to 2023, and the Pokemon TCG is still going strong, regularly releasing exciting new cards and events – like the upcoming Halloween 2023 card set.
Some Pokemon cards are extremely valuable, such as the illustrator CoroCoro Comics Promo (Pikachu illustrated card), which sold for over 6 million USD.
It is not uncommon for some people to be forced to steal to get their hands on valuable cards, and there have been other cases of store break-ins resulting in cards being stolen.
Thieves don’t stop to take Pokemon cards
CBS reported that the thieves were so determined to get their hands on the Pokemon TCG that they used a hammer to smash the store’s glass door to gain entry at 3 a.m. local time.
The thieves had one goal in mind – steal the Toy Store’s Pokemon cards and get away with a total of $600 worth of cards from the Pittsburgh store.
The stolen cards have not yet been identified, nor have the robbers been found. However, security footage captured the robbery taking place.
“The suspects broke into the house by using a hammer to smash the front door, breaking the glass. Once inside, the suspects took $600 worth of Pokemon cards,” the post from the West Chester County Police Department said.
The force has urged anyone who may have information to come forward.
But with more than 15,078 cards released since the Pokemon TCG’s inception, fans are happy that thieves have yet to get their hands on some of the community’s prized assets. Cards like the PSA 10 Torchic Gold Star Holo Team Rocket Returns or Blastiose’s first edition Shadowless Base set.
