Southwest Airlines was forced to make an emergency landing after the engine cover on the Boeing 737-800 tore off during takeoff.

Boeing aircraft have been the subject of intense scrutiny after a series of incidents that left passengers concerned about safety, from tires losing on takeoff to entire windows blowing out mid-flight.

Now, that appears to have happened again after a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-800 flight from Denver was forced to make an emergency landing after the engine covers began to open during takeoff.

Passengers and crew on the flight to Houston noticed that a removable metal panel known as the engine cover had been torn off, with footage showing it hitting one of the plane’s flaps.

The flight returned to Denver International Airport, with a Southwest Airlines spokesperson telling the New York Post that the flight “landed safely after experiencing a mechanical issue.”

“Our customer will arrive at Houston Hobby on a different plane, approximately three hours later than expected,” the statement continued.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently investigating the incident, although many passengers have responded to this latest news by refusing all Boeing flights.

“If it was Boeing, I wouldn’t go!” one person wrote on X (officially Twitter).

However, many also pointed out that the loss of the engine cover may have been due to a maintenance issue and not Boeing’s fault; “I was an Aircraft Mechanic for 21 years in the United States Air Force and the engine cover falling off was due to poor maintenance and had nothing to do with Boeing or the construction of the 737.”
