Twitch could face legal action in Sweden after a separate investigation found eight out of 10 popular Swedish streamers advertised unlicensed casinos to viewers their.
After being banned in Türkiye earlier this year over gambling concerns, the popular live streaming platform is now facing increased scrutiny in Sweden for similar reasons.
In April 2024, an investigation from Kulturnyheterna, an investigative arm of the Swedish television network Sveriges Television AB, found that “eight out of ten Swedish influencers on Twitch promoted casinos do not have a license for their audience.”
The investigation, which took place over a six-week period, saw Kulturnyheterna review livestreams from the country’s most prominent influencers.

According to their findings, these streamers “were seen making live calls to gamble, play along with their audience, and involve viewers in betting decisions, deepening participation in gambling activities”.

The investigation also found that 60% of these streamers used marketing tactics such as placing links to unlicensed casinos in their profiles and even “promoting monetary incentives reward” their viewers.

Kulturnyheterna sent their findings to Sweden’s gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen, claiming that “Twitch has become the most popular platform for promoting unlicensed casinos.”
Although Spelinspektionen has not yet issued an official response to the investigation, it warns that it is illegal to advertise unlicensed casinos under the Swedish Gambling Act, which could lead to interference. Police intervention or even outright bans for offending businesses – meaning Twitch could face a ban in Sweden if changes are not made.

As mentioned earlier, this is not the first time Twitch has faced scrutiny for allowing streaming gambling content on its platform. In 2022, several prominent streamers spoke out against the practice after popular broadcaster Sliker admitted to defrauding his fans and fellow creators out of “several thousand” to fuel his gambling addiction.
Although Twitch later made changes to its policies by banning gambling sites that were not licensed in the United States or did not provide “adequate consumer protection,” the site continues to face backlash and is even banned in some countries for allowing it to air.
